In 1985 the design of the G13 Project, the Volvo 480 was nearing completion. John de Vries, the Exterior designer, had left to take over at DAF Trucks, and only a few details remained incomplete.
One concern from Sweden was that the design at the time did not feature the classic Volvo grille with the diagonal & emblem.
Various themes were evaluated, placing the diagonal of the painted front, but the chosen design, inspired by a Ferrari solution, was to place the grille below the bumper.
